I was just reading through WhatsApp status and I saw this poem by Oyinlola Awolesi, it resonated so easily with me and I reached out to her if she could let it go on my blog. She agreed and here we are…
Yes, you are golden. I wouldn’t know how many people had it so smooth from birth to adulthood but there are these category of people who always met one hurdle or the other in their journey. The special thing about this category is that they ALWAYS WIN. They aren’t tired of breaking bricks and surmounting challenges, no matter the challenges on their way, the overcome and still do so well. This poem is to tell you that there is hope irrespective of what you go through.
There were walls built around me,
Each brick concealing some pains,
Each cement crease covering up a scar, a bruise, a secret,
My eyes were always tired and cheeks were always wet,
But after being pushed so often,
I learnt to watch my step…
I was never the popular one,
Yet undoubtedly the Desired but I stood back and I emphathized,
Because even the moon envied how much light poured into my melanin skin,
The stars told me that my skin could even make a blind man gasp…
This skies told me to be careful,
One day my footsteps will make the earth tremble,
The Angels told me, my body is a temple,
My parts, God’s own…
Light me candles, part the seas,
Respect me, I am Seraphic,
Because I am not just brown,
I am golden…
Convincing myself in the mirror, I said I was never broken,
Because there is the Moon and then there is the Sun,
There is the New and then the Old,
There is the Silver and there is the Gold,
Trust me,
I am the GOLD!!! candles, part the seas,
Respect me, I am Seraphic,
Because I am not just brown,
I am golden…
Convincing myself in the mirror, I said I was never broken,
Because there is the Moon and then there is the Sun,
There is the New and then the Old,
There is the Silver and there is the Gold,
Trust me,
I am the GOLD!!!
Don’t let anything break you, rather break everything that stands in your way to your desired destination. You’re a champion, you’re golden!
